Martin tried to set a world record for speed on a specially constructed version of the Wall of Death fairground attraction. The live special featured Martin being trained on an existing wall by Ken Fox to overcome dizziness. Martin was also given aerial training to overcome G-force’s main limiting factor. Hugh Hunt from Cambridge University explored the science and revealed the equation G=S/(25*D), in which G is G-Force. S is speed in mph. D is the wall’s diameter in metres. The location chosen, Manby Airfield hangar, was too small to meet Martin’s 100 mph target. However, Martin could still reach 80 mph with an updated target of less than 7G. Therefore, the wall of 37.5 metres that was eventually built would be sufficient. Martin could then challenge the previous claim of 70 mph. This was incorrectly determined by video analysis. Guinness World Records set a new record for the show: Highest speed on a Wall of Death. It also established an initial qualifying benchmark of 60 miles per hour in just two attempts. Martin was able to reach 70.33 mph on his first attempt using an Indian Scout motorcycle. On his second attempt, Martin used a modified 1972 Rob North T160 Trident Triple bike, which he purposely built to extend the record to 125.77 km/h (78.15mph). Shanaze Reade, a smaller cyclist, set the Guinness record at 42.94 km/h (26.6 mph) prior to Martin’s attempt.
