Michael Denzil Xavier Portillo, born 26 May 1953, is a British journalist and broadcaster. He was also a former politician and cabinet minister for the Conservative Party. Portillo was elected in a by-election to the House of Commons for the first time in 1984. A strong supporter of Margaret Thatcher and a Eurosceptic himself, Portillo worked as a junior minister under John Major and Thatcher before entering the cabinet of 1992. He was seen as a potential challenger to Major in the 1995 Conservative leadership election. However, he kept his loyalty. He was seen as a potential challenger to Major during the 1995 Conservative leadership election. Political commentators believe he would have been elected Conservative leader if he had retained his Enfield Southgate seat. Portillo returned to the Commons in 1999 through a by-election at Kensington and Chelsea. He was elected Shadow Chancellor. However, his relationship with William Hague, Conservative Leader, was difficult. Portillo was third behind Kenneth Clarke and Iain Duncan Smith when he stood for the leadership of his party in 2001. Portillo retired as a member of the Commons after the 2005 general elections and has continued to pursue his media interests. He presents a variety of radio and television programmes.
