Subconscious Creativity is a non-scientific term and lacks a well-defined definition. Creativity simply means being able to come up with your own clever and logical ideas.

I interacted among my friends and trainees, and the most common response was that their best ideas come to them when they are in the toilet or taking a shower.

Others said that they are more mentally creative when engaging in activities like walking the dog, jogging, and someone even said his best ideas hit him on waking up.


Indeed, no one has ever suggested that their best ideas come to them at Work. this response is pretty concerning.

Let’s analyze this real-life experience as an example to throw more light to understand subconscious creativity.

Try to remember the last real argument you were involved in. Tempers were already high and voiced raised, and you were defending your point of view with very good points.

The argument somehow manages to end, but you were still somewhat furious.

Fast forward to 10 minutes later, and you have begun to calm down are become occupied with an unrelated task. Then it happens! It comes to you: that killer point you’d wished you thought of during the argument.

If only it had come earlier, it would have been the perfect comeback point that would have completely invalidate the point of view of your opponent.

Why does this happen, almost every time?

Being engaged in an argument is similar to being in the office, and trust me, the best ideas are not accessible in such situations.

In the example above, your brain was so busy defending your point of view that it couldn’t create and deliver that perfect response.

Similarly, in the office, you are likely too busy with office stuff and there’s no time for subconscious creativity or creative thinking.

When you don’t have time to blind off the world and think, then it’s going to be hard to come up with big ideas.

From what I know, we only make use of our conscious mental ability, and that represents only a surprising 13% of the brain’s capacity.

The other 87% of our brain ability goes unused because when we are stressed or don’t have time to think, the door between our conscious and subconscious mind closes.

When this door is closed, access to all of that subconscious creativity is denied, and we come up with no big ideas. Every activity you have ever participated in, the meal you’ve eaten, places you’ve visited, movies you’ve seen, etc…  are all back there in your subconscious mind.

You can always use these memories as references to make unrelated connections back to the challenge at hand and to support the creation of big ideas and innovations.

How Playfulness Impacts Subconscious Creativity

Playfulness is important for subconscious creativity. It is the key to get into the brain state where the door between our conscious and subconscious brain is open. In this state, we make rational decisions and also have access to stuff that stimulates our subconscious mind.

I always try to open this door whenever I am leading a session; I look out and listen for laughter. The moment I perceive playfulness, I know that the participants have opened the door, and can now access their creative ideas.

Thoughtful Thetas

For those that get their best ideas when falling asleep or waking up, this is the brain state that is popularly known as the “Thoughtful Theta.”

It’s the state just before you nod off to sleep, but not yet in a deep sleep.

The thoughtful theta state can also be achieved at the moment when you are coming out of deep sleep into some level of consciousness.

Thomas Edison was an inventor in the 20th century. He was a Thoughtful Theta, and he conducted an experiment to demonstrate how to open the door between his conscious and subconscious brain.

Edison would sit and place a coin between his knees. He will also place a small tin tray on the floor below his knees such that if the coin falls, it will land on the tray.

Now, as he nods off to sleep, his muscles would start to relax and the penny would fall, hitting the tray and making enough noise that jumps him back up from sleep.

He would then write down whatever thoughts he was having. This led to Edison having more invention patents in the U.S. than any other inventors.

Subconscious creativity is such an unstable process for most of us. It can come and go by the minute or the hour, and it’s hard to get into a state of creative flow where our mind is supplying brilliant ideas.

There are habits and methods, however, that we can create to get us to this high place of consistent subconscious creativity.

But the problem is staying there for as long as need be. So, let’s see if we can learn to maximize our time in creative intellect.

Ideas for great literature, music, art, businesses, and well-being come through the air or heavens as some would believe, and seem to magically pop up in our heads (minds).

While some ideas are divinely inspired, others are from the accumulation of experiences. Acts, thoughts, words, sights, smells, sounds, and touches impacts our subconscious creativity and leave impressions on our subconscious minds and in our memories. These impressions are to come into play at a time yet unknown.

Here is the process you can use to get to a place of subconscious creativity

  1. Find a Quiet Place to begin with. Remember that solitude is key to accessing your subconscious mind. Close your eyes and try to focus on your inner thoughts.
  2. Calm Your Mind and Let go of worries, stresses and negative thoughts. Block out the day’s challenges and other distractions. avoid having mobile devices around.
  3. Make Positive Pronouncements of yourself to nourish your mental and emotional being. Encourage yourself, and speak the positive over your life.
  4. Calm Your Mind Again and Listen deep to your Inner Voice. Is it saying something? Anything? What images are coming to your mind and what line of thoughts are you experiencing?
  5. Replay the dominant thoughts in your mind and make a clear mental memory of those thoughts that feel right and align with your values, purpose and goals.
  6. Now, see if you can dive deeper, and try to make sense or a vivid image of what these thoughts are.
  7. Focus on Listening, and avoid being too analytical with the ideas and thoughts.
  8. Maintain calmness and maximize your concentration in the moment.
  9. Then wrap up, be thankful and visualize the thoughts that popped into your mind, especially those that you think align most with your values.
  10. What to do with the thoughts and Images? Write these images, thoughts and Ideas out so that you don’t forget. Leave them there and then revisit them with a clear mind and aim of using them to make a difference in however you feel best.

Most people find it difficult to access subconscious creativity because it takes discipline, mindfulness, and mental endurance. I used to feel brain fatigue the same way until I started discovering how much creativity was stored away in my mind’s memory. I even come up with clean ideas on subjects I had no idea I was interested in.

However, it requires self-possession and calmness, extraordinary emotional intelligence, and endurance with confidence.

Control over consciousness requires the commitment of emotions and determination. It is not enough to know how to do it, but you must do it, consistently.

Some people are scared of what they might find in their subconscious minds. They’re fearful of doubt, and criticism. You have to block these emotions and quiet your mind. Try to get to a state of clear thought about things that really inspire you.
